Women's Volleyball Knocks Off Previously-Unbeaten Stevens, 3-1

Box Score

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team (9-4) bounced back from a first-set loss to the Stevens Institute of Technology (12-1) on Wednesday night in non-conference action, prevailing, 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-12), and handing the Ducks their first loss of the year.

After hitting .045 in the first set, the Hawks rebounded to hit .245 in the second, .290 in the third and .321 in the fourth to finish the evening with a .207 hitting percentage. Stevens, meanwhile, hit .079 for the match, which included a -.083 clip in the fourth stanza.

In the first set, Stevens hopped out to a 12-4 start, but New Paltz stormed back and back-to-back kills from freshman middle hitter Morgan Roessler (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) made it a 17-all score. The Ducks constructed a 23-18 advantage, but four straight Hawk points drew New Paltz within one at 23-22. A service error by New Paltz and a service ace by Stevens gave the Ducks set one, 25-22.

Stevens appeared headed toward a set-two win after it led, 21-17. New Paltz scored five of the next six points, and a Duck attack error made it a 22-all tally. Following a Stevens timeout, the Ducks scored on a service error, but three consecutive Hawk points gave New Paltz a 25-23 set victory.

Sets three and four wound up being lopsided in New Paltz's favor, as Stevens never led and tied the score just once.

Sophomore outside hitter Becca Borquist (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Rhinebeck) and Roessler tallied 19 and 14 kills, respectively, to lead the Hawk attack. Senior setter Marissa King (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) boasted a double-double with 45 assists and 11 digs, while junior outside hitter Katy Herbst (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) racked up 26 digs.

For Stevens, Mary Tobin was the lone person to reach double figures in kills with 11, while Samantha Gates doled out 23 assists. Kirsten Salmins led the Ducks defensively with 19 digs.

New Paltz returns to action this weekend from Friday-Saturday, Sept. 20-21, at the NYU Violet Classic. The Hawks kick off the tournament on Friday at 4 p.m. against UMass-Boston.
