Women’s Soccer Drops 5-0 Decision to Wheaton (Mass.)

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team (2-4-2) was shut out by Wheaton (Mass.) College (4-3-1), 5-0, Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field. The Lyons scored three first-half goals within eight minutes of each other, and then added two more in the final frame.

Allie Hinrichs kicked off the scoring for Wheaton with a goal in the 21st minute. After sophomore goalkeeper Krysten Kane (Macedon, N.Y./Wayne Central) stopped two consecutive shots, Hinrichs found the open net off a rebound. Laila Razzaghi followed Hinrichs with another goal just 54 seconds later after a scramble in the box. Julia Cipriano contributed the third goal of the half off of passes from Kelsee Howes and Kaitlin Montoya to give the Lyons a three-goal advantage.

Cipriano scored again in the 51st minute off a cross from Hinrichs to push the Wheaton lead to four. In the 71st minute, Cat Amick sent a perfect pass from the far left wing up to the right-hand side of the box to set up a successful scoring opportunity for Alex Leonardi, which put the Hawks down five goals.

Kane shouldered the loss after allowing five goals, but she increased her State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) lead to 47 saves with six in the loss. Lauren Thacker needed just one save to pick up her second win and second shutout of the year for the Lyons.

Wheaton outshot the Hawks, 27-11, including a 13-2 edge in shots on goal. They also earned four corner kicks to just three for New Paltz.

The Hawks look to bounce back on Friday, Sept. 27, when they open SUNYAC play with a home matchup against SUNY Oswego. The action is set to kick off from Alumni Field at 4 p.m.
