Men’s Soccer Drops 1-0 Heartbreaker to Union (N.Y.)

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team (1-4-2) suffered a heartbreaking late-game defeat at the hands of Union (N.Y.) College (7-0-1) by the score of 1-0 on Tuesday at Alumni Field.

Union's Carl Faber converted on a header off a corner from Kevin Janson at the 84:10 mark to give the Dutchmen the only score of the game. Faber's netter was his team-leading sixth of the season.

The Hawks had a chance to take the lead early in the second half when senior forward Javier Ventas (Madrid, Spain/Santa Maria del Pilar) blasted a shot from in close toward an empty net in the 52nd minute. A Union defender dove in the way at the last second and kept the ball in front of the line, preventing a sure goal.

Junior goalkeeper Steven Domino (Valatie, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) suffered a tough loss after making five saves prior to allowing the only goal. Union's Ryan Carter picked up his seventh win of the season, making three saves en route to a shutout.

In their attempt to upset the undefeated Dutchmen, the Hawks outshot the visitors, 12-11, on the afternoon. However, Union earned nine corner kicks to just three for the Hawks; one of which set up the winning goal.

New Paltz returns to action on Friday, Sept. 27, when they travel up to SUNY Oswego to face off with the Lakers in their first State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup of the season. Friday's contest is scheduled to kick off at 4 p.m.
