ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team (3-3) won twice to kick off the University of Rochester Volleyball Invitational on Friday night. The Hawks prevailed, 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-16), over St. John Fisher College before topping Skidmore College, 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 25-14, 25-21).
Freshman middle hitter Morgan Roessler (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) floored nine kills and hit .538 in the match against St. John Fisher. Senior setter Marissa King (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) dished out 24 assists, while senior libero Carrie Hack (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) registered 16 digs. King, sophomore outside hitter Becca Borquist (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Rhinebeck) and junior outside hitter Alli Coleman (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton Central) all paced the front row defensively with two total blocks each.
Versus Skidmore, the Hawks hit .205—including a .281 clip in the second set—en route to their four-set victory. Borquist's 20 kills and seven digs led the way, while Roessler and Coleman boasted 13 and 11 kills, respectively. King dished out 50 assists, while Hack corralled 14 digs. Coleman finished with five total blocks.
New Paltz wraps up action at the tournament tomorrow, facing Hamilton College at 1 p.m. before taking on host Rochester at 3 p.m.
