RALEIGH, N.C. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team (0-1-2) played to a 1-1 draw with Meredith College (0-1-2) on Saturday in the opening contest of the Meredith Classic in Raleigh, N.C.
Meredith's Danielle Lee opened up the game's scoring with a netter at the 21-minute mark to give the Avenging Angels a 1-0 advantage. However, the Hawks managed to pull even at 34:10 when sophomore forward Chelsea Weir (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) scored her first goal of the season off assists from junior midfielder Eleni Anselmi (Garnerville, N.Y./North Rockland) and sophomore midfielder Kristina Gandolfo (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun). Neither team was able to get one past the other's keeper the rest of the way, resulting in the 1-1 tie.
Sophomore goalkeeper Krysten Kane (Macedon, N.Y./Wayne Central), the reigning State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, stopped eight shots to earn her second draw of the season. Meredith goalie Kelsey Hopper made six saves to keep the score knotted up at one.
The Avenging Angels fired off 22 shots in Saturday's matchup, while the Hawks took just 12. Meredith also held a 10-5 advantage in corner kicks.
The Hawks return to action tomorrow, Sept. 8, when they take on Guilford College to close out their weekend in Raleigh. The game is scheduled to kick off at 12 p.m.
