Men’s Soccer Drops 3-2 Heartbreaker to FDU-Florham

Box Score

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – A goal with 19 seconds remaining by Fairleigh Dickinson-College at Florham's (3-1) Ryan Hurdes gave the Devils a 3-2 victory over the State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team (0-2-1) on Sunday in the championship matchup of the Gary Smith Invitational hosted by St. Joseph's (LI) College.

The win gives the Devils the tournament crown. Hurdes' game winner was his second score of the day. His first came off a feed from Igor Petrovic at the 52:45 mark and tied the game at 1-1.

Junior goalkeeper Andres Montoya (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue) suffered the loss in his first start of the season, allowing three goals and stopping four shots. Nick Mihalik made nine saves for the Devils to pick up the win.

The Hawks got on the board first in Sunday's contest. Senior midfielder Hobie Ramin (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) scored on a rebound in the 22nd minute to give the Hawks the early edge. They took the lead into the half before Hurdes tied the game early in the second frame.

After a New Paltz penalty in their own goal box, Andrew Ruane scored a penalty kick goal for FDU-Florham to give the Devils the lead in the 74th minute. Less than two minutes later, senior midfielder Bernardo Menendez (Buenos Aires, Argentina/San Martin de Tours) scored his second goal of the year to knot things up at 2-2. Hurdes followed that up in the 90th minute with the game-winning netter.

The Hawks doubled up the Devils with a 16-8 shot deficit. FDU-Florham held a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.

The Hawks return to action on Friday, Sept. 13, when they play a non-conference game at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The game is slated to kick off at 5 p.m.
