Women’s Soccer Defeats Potsdam, 1-0, for Second SUNYAC Win

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team blanked SUNY Potsdam 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field for the Hawks' second-straight State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) victory.

With the win, New Paltz improves to 8-5-2, 2-2-2 SUNYAC. After the defeat, the Bears drop to 5-7-1, 0-5-0 SUNYAC. The Hawks will next play at SUNY Oneonta on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 1 p.m. Potsdam, meanwhile, hosts Buffalo State on Friday, Oct. 17 at 3 p.m.

A goal by senior captain Eleni Anselmi (Garnerville, N.Y./North Rockland) in the 17th minute provided all the offense New Paltz would need on the day, as she rocketed in a shot from the top of the 18 into the left side of the net.

For Anselmi, it marked her fifth goal of the year and 12th of her career as she has now tallied a score in three consecutive matches. Junior forward Chelsea Weir (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) and junior midfielder Kristina Gandolfo (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) provided the assists on the score.

For the match, the Hawks outshot the Bears 19-16, including a 7-4 shots-on-goal edge. Anselmi led the New Paltz attack with four shots while Gandolfo chipped in with three. Senior midfielder Sarah Painter (Blue Point, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point), sophomore midfielder Hannah Moran (Albany, N.Y./Albany) and freshman forward Gabriela Cabello (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) all registered two shots apiece.

Freshman goalkeeper Katelyn Cordero (Airmont, N.Y./Suffern) earned her eighth victory of the year as she was forced to make four saves, recording her fifth clean sheet of the season. New Paltz improves to 9-2-2 against Potsdam since 2002.

Four seniors played their final regular season home game for New Paltz as Anselmi, Painter, defender Christine Lacaria (Watertown, CT/Holy Cross) and defender Bryce Kristall (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West) were honored for their contributions to the program prior to the match.
