Box Score NEWBURGH, N.Y. - The State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team snapped a nine-match winless streak with a 2-1 win at Mount Saint Mary College on Tuesday night.
Junior forward
Jason Gonzalez (Woodside, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) tallied both goals for the Hawks as New Paltz ended the team's longest winless drought since 2007.
The Hawks move to 4-10-1 and in the process, earned their first road win of the season (1-8) and wrapped up a six-game road trip. New Paltz will host No. 4 SUNY Oneonta on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 1 p.m. in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) clash. The Knights move to 8-4-1 and will play at Purchase College on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Skyline Conference action.
In the opening period, New Paltz surrendered another early score and fell behind to the Knights 1-0 in just the fourth minute of play. Matt Garcia notched his sixth goal of the year off a shot inside the box, thanks to an assist by Sean Lockwood. The match remained 1-0 in favor of Mount Saint Mary for the remainder of the first half.
But the second half was another story for New Paltz as Gonzalez ripped in his first goal of the night and fifth of the year off a shot from the middle of the box to knot the contest at 1-1 in the 55
th minute.
Gonzalez was not done, however, and notched his second of the evening and sixth of the year in the 79
th minute. The junior dribbled into the box and beat the Knights' keeper to hand the Hawks a 2-1 lead. Mount Saint Mary managed just one shot the rest of the way as New Paltz held on for the road victory.
Gonzalez led the attack with a game-high five shots, four being on target. Freshman forward
Gino Scardino (West Hempstead, N.Y. /H. Frank Carey) registered two shots off the bench as the Hawks outshot Mount Saint Mary 12-7.
Senior goalkeeper
Steven Domino (Valatie, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) earned the win, his second of the year, and made three saves. For the Knights, Tyler Biscone recorded five stops.
