Box Score ONEONTA, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team dropped a tough 1-0 match at SUNY Oneonta in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action on Saturday afternoon.
The Hawks fall to 8-6-2, 2-3-2 SUNYAC and return to the pitch next weekend in the final regular season conference games at Buffalo State and SUNY Fredonia on Friday-Saturday, Oct. 24-25. The Red Dragons move to 6-6-2, 4-2-1 SUNYAC and play at Ithaca College on Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 3 p.m.
In the SUNYAC playoff picture, Oneonta now has control of the No. 3 seed with 13 points while New Paltz is currently on the outside looking in with eight points but have two conference matches remaining.
New Paltz surrendered a goal in only the fourth minute to senior Lana Vecchiarelli, her first of the year, and were forced to play from behind the remainder of the game. Vecchiarelli corralled a rebound off an initial shot by senior Elise Moinzadeh and put the Hawks into the early deficit.
The Hawks managed to fire off three shots in the first half and another two in the second period but were unable to find the back of the net. Five different players recorded shots as sophomore midfielder
Skye Kaler (Charlton, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Spa) managed the only shot on goal.
Oneonta held a commanding 16-5 shots margin, including a 9-1 shots-on-goal edge. New Paltz, however, held a 5-3 corner kick advantage.
Freshman goalkeeper
Katelyn Cordero (Airmont, N.Y./Suffern) was charged with the loss despite turning away eight Oneonta shots. Kelley Murphy earned the win for the Red Dragons, her fourth of the season and second clean sheet of the year.
