Women’s Volleyball Tops Union (N.Y.), 3-0, in Skidmore Invitational Opener

Box Score

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team stretched its winning streak to six and has now won 10 of its last 11 matches, as it topped Union (N.Y.) College, 3-0 (25-13, 25-23, 25-19), in its first match at the Skidmore Invitational on Friday evening.

New Paltz had its offense working against the Dutchwomen, hitting .278 for the match off 49 kills and just 14 errors in 126 total attempts. Meanwhile, Union was held to just .125 hitting (29-15-112). The Hawks held a slight edge in service aces (6-5), while both teams had three total blocks.

The Hawks rise to 27-5 overall with the win face Farmingdale State College and host Skidmore College tomorrow at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively, to close out their regular season. Union drops to 22-11 and squares off with SUNY Fredonia and SUNY Potsdam tomorrow at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.

The first set was all New Paltz, as there was just one tie score the entire frame. The Hawks fired off five points in a row to claim a 10-4 advantage, which ultimately gave New Paltz the separation it needed to win the first stanza, 25-13.

Union made things interesting in the second set, as the Dutchwomen played strong early to vault out to a 10-7 lead. New Paltz wrested the advantage away from Union with a six-point spurt, and a service ace by senior right side Alex Bizub (Linden, N.J./Cranford) handed the Hawks a 13-10 edge. Union slowly chipped away at the lead and finally regained it at 21-20 off a Hawk attacking error. Following a Union point that made the score 23-21 in favor of the Dutchwomen, New Paltz called a timeout that ultimately changed the course of the set, as the Hawks scored four straight points to pull out a 25-23 triumph in the frame.

A big rally early in the third set allowed the Hawks to construct what would be an insurmountable lead, as New Paltz scored eight straight points to pull out in front, 10-5. Union would come no closer than within three points the remainder of the frame, and New Paltz earned a 25-19 match-clinching victory in the third.

Junior outside hitter Becca Borquist (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Rhinebeck) led the Hawks with a 13-kill, 14-dig double-double, while senior middle hitter Alli Coleman (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton Central) floored 10 kills. Freshman setter Maddie Zwickl (Chester, N.Y./Warwick Valley) dished out 40 assists, while senior libero Katy Herbst (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) defended 16 digs.

For Union, junior outside hitter Kelley White notched a team-high 10 kills, while sophomore setter Amanda Price handed out 26 assists. Sophomore libero Kat Moeller led three Dutchwomen in double-digit dig figures with 18 on the match.
