NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Despite flooring 17 kills and hitting .273 in the third set, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team was unable to prevent a straight-set sweep against Haverford College in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament at the Newport News Regional on Friday at Christopher Newport University's Freeman Center, falling by a 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-23) final.

The Hawks end their season at 31-6 overall after claiming their second-ever State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) title and making their fifth-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. Haverford rises to 22-9 overall and will face the winner of the match between No. 12 Eastern University and Salem College tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.

Haverford, an at-large qualifier which competes in the Centennial Conference, served New Paltz tough all match, finishing with 10 aces, while the Hawks were superior at the net defensively, holding a 4-3 edge in total team blocks. The difference in the match came on offense, as the Fords hit at a .232 clip, while the Hawks hit .117.

New Paltz, the automatic qualifier out of the SUNYAC, started out hot, scoring the first three points in the first set. Haverford came back, though, reversing a 7-6 Hawk advantage into a 12-7 Ford lead after six straight Haverford points. The Hawks fired off four unanswered points of their own, and after trading points, New Paltz reclaimed the lead at 15-14. The two teams continued to trade points down the stretch, but following a block assist by sophomore middle hitter Morgan Roessler (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) and sophomore outside hitter Anna Paulik (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh), Haverford finished the set with three straight points to claim a 25-21 victory in the first.

The Hawks claimed an early lead once again in the second, as a kill by senior middle hitter Alli Coleman (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton Central) capped a 4-0 Hawk run that pushed the score to 5-3. Haverford scored seven straight points to grab a 14-8 lead, and while New Paltz pulled within two at 15-13, the Fords scored 10 of the set's final 12 points to post a 25-15 triumph in the second.

Haverford controlled the momentum early in the third, but the Hawks fought back valiantly, turning a 14-10 deficit into a 15-14 lead. During that stretch, junior outside hitter and 2014 SUNYAC Player of the Year Becca Borquist (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Rhinebeck) floored four kills. Haverford put New Paltz on the ropes at 24-21 following a Hawk service error, but back-to-back kills by Roessler and Borquist drew New Paltz within one with match point on the line. The Fords, however, turned to junior middle hitter and 2014 Centennial Conference Player of the Year Meg O'Day once again, and she pounded down a kill to clinch the match for Haverford.

Borquist led the Hawk attack with 13 kills and a .211 hitting percentage, while freshman setter Maddie Zwickl (Chester, N.Y./Warwick Valley) dished out 27 assists. Paulik landed three service aces, while senior libero Katy Herbst (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) and Paulik reinforced the back row defensively with 21 and 10 digs, respectively.

For Haverford, O'Day led the way with 11 kills and a .269 hitting percentage, while junior setter Olivia Walsh and freshman setter Zoe Wong provided 16 and 13 assists, respectively. Wong posted four service aces, while junior libero Jeanne Kenney defended 20 digs.
