NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – After topping SUNY Cortland by 10 points, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's basketball team looks to gain momentum as it hosts a pair of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) games against Buffalo State and SUNY Fredonia at the Hawk Center on Friday, Feb. 7, and Saturday, Feb. 8, at 6 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
HONORING NEW PALTZ FIELD HOCKEY: At halftime of Friday's game against Buffalo State, New Paltz will honor its SUNYAC champion field hockey program, which won its second title in as many years in 2013.
RECORDS: New Paltz currently holds a 5-15 overall mark and a 3-10 SUNYAC record… Buffalo State has a 16-3 overall record while holding an 11-1 conference mark… SUNY Fredonia holds an 11-7 overall mark with a 6-6 SUNYAC record.
SCOUTING THE HAWKS (5-15, 3-10 SUNYAC): New Paltz beat Cortland on the road on Tuesday, Feb. 4, in conference play… Freshman forward
Kit Small led the Hawks to victory by scoring 22 points and snagging eight rebounds… Junior guards
Ashley Riefenhauser and
Shannan Walker came up clutch late in the game by hitting three-pointers to help seal the victory… Other notable performances for the Hawks included the play of sophomore guard
Goldie Harrison, who finished the game with 10 points, and freshman forward
Courtney Irby, who notched eight rebounds.
STATISTICAL LEADERS: Small leads New Paltz in scoring with 12 points per game… Irby is solid on the boards by notching eight rebounds per game, which leads the Hawks and is good for fifth overall in the SUNYAC... Harrison is good for 2.3 steals per game, which is second in the conference… Harrison is also the assists leader for the Hawks (2.1)… Walker leads the Hawks in minutes played with 33 minutes per game, which is good for fourth in the conference.
TEAM STATISTICS: New Paltz holds its opponents to 65 points per game… The Hawks are fourth in the conference in offensive rebounds (14.1)... Opponents only shoot 64 percent from the free-throw line, which is good for third in the conference… The Hawks rank fifth in the conference in blocks, as they block 2.7 shots per game… They also rank fifth in the conference in steals, as they average 9.9 per game.
SCOUTING THE BENGALS (16-3, 11-1 SUNYAC): Buffalo State extended its winning streak to six games after coasting to a 66-49 victory over Cortland on Saturday, Feb. 1, in Buffalo, N.Y… Junior guard Olivia Luciani led the Bengals with 16 points, which included four three-pointers... Senior guard Staci McElroy bolstered the offense as well by scoring 12 points and adding nine rebounds and four assists... Sophomore guard Mariah Norris added to the offense by scoring 12 points off the bench.
STATISTICAL LEADERS: McElroy leads the Bengals in scoring with 13.1 points per game, which is good for 10th in the conference… Senior forward Bianca Smiley is solid on the boards for Buffalo State, as she takes in 8.7 rebounds per game, which ranks her third overall in the SUNYAC… Senior guard Kala Crawford leads the team with 3.5 assists per game, which puts her at fifth in the conference.
TEAM STATISTICS: Buffalo State has the third-best offense in the SUNYAC, as it scores 70.6 points per game… The Bengals also only give up 60.5 points per game, which gives them a 10.1 scoring margin… As a team, they shoot 40 percent from the field, which ranks third in the SUNYAC… The Bengals are one of the best rebounding teams in the conference, as they bring in 14.5 offensive rebounds per game, which places them at second in the SUNYAC.

SCOUTING THE BLUE DEVILS (11-7, 6-6 SUNYAC): Fredonia is coming off an 89-79 win against SUNY Oswego from Saturday, Feb. 1, in Fredonia, N.Y… It was a milestone night, as senior guard/ forward Becky Hebert, scored a school-record 44 points… It was a total team effort, as Hebert had plenty of support... Freshman guard Alexis Cheatham and senior forward Jaimie Warren both finished with 17 points, while Cheatham notched 10 assists... Sophomore forward Sabrina Macaulay snagged 12 rebounds and blocked four shots.
STATISTICAL LEADERS: Hebert leads the Blue Devils and the SUNYAC in scoring (23.6 ppg), field-goal percentage (58.1 percent), and minutes played (35.9 mpg)… She ranks seventh in NCAA Division III in scoring… Warren leads the Blue Devils and is second in the SUNYAC in rebounding with 9.8 rebounds per game… Cheatham is atop of the conference in assists, as she averages 5.5 assists per game.
TEAM STATISTICS: Fredonia has the No. 1 scoring offense in the conference, as it scores 71.7 points per game… The Blue Devils' defense only gives up 66.8 points per game… With an efficient attack, Fredonia ranks No. 1 in the SUNYAC in field-goal percentage (44 percent)… The Blue Devils also rank first in the SUNYAC from the free-throw line (71.8 percent) and in assists per game (16.2).
