Jason Gonzalez (Woodside, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) scored for the State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team in the 2014 season opener, but the Hawks fell, 2-1, at The College at Old Westbury on Saturday afternoon following a last-second goal by Old Westbury.
In only the 13th minute, Gonzalez, playing his first match for New Paltz since transferring from NCAA Division I NJIT, found the back of the net off an assist from senior midfielder
Alec Johnson (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) to hand the Hawks an early 1-0 advantage. New Paltz would control the action the remainder of the first half, outshooting the Panthers 12-0 in the opening period. In fact, the Hawks outshot Old Westbury 26-4 in the entire game.
Old Westbury recorded the equalizer in the 59th minute, and the match remained knotted at 1-1 until the Panthers notched a goal with only four seconds remaining in regulation to hand New Paltz the heartbreaking season-opening defeat.
New Paltz drops to 0-1 overall and next competes at the Vassar Invitational from Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 6-7, against Farmingdale State College (Sept. 6 at 4 p.m.) and Elms College (Sept. 7 at 12 p.m.). Old Westbury rises to 1-0 overall and visits the John Jay College of Criminal Justice on Wednesday, Sept. 3, at 4 p.m.
Gonzalez led the Hawk attack with five shots, while senior midfielder
Stephen Browne (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) and sophomore forward
Tucker Stern (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz) each fired off four shots.
