Women’s Volleyball Finishes Clarkson Classic with Split

POTSDAM, N.Y. – On the second and final day of the Clarkson Classic Saturday at Clarkson University's Alumni Gymnasium, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team salvaged yet another split to finish the weekend at 2-2. The Hawks fell, 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-17), to host and 20th-ranked Clarkson University in their first match of the day before topping Simmons College, 3-0 (25-10, 25-19, 25-18), in the nightcap.

Sophomore outside hitter Becca Borquist (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Rhinebeck) was named to the All-Tournament Team following the conclusion of the event.

New Paltz, which moved to 2-2 overall with the weekend's results, next competes at the Vassar Tournament from Friday-Saturday, Sept. 5-6, at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Clarkson rose to 2-1 with the win, and after its final match of the event against Roger Williams University, the Golden Knights next compete at the Colorado College Classic in Colorado Springs, Colo., from Friday-Saturday, Sept. 5-6. Simmons drops to 0-3 and hosts Smith College on Tuesday, Sept. 2, at 5 p.m.

No. 20 Clarkson 3, New Paltz 0

Clarkson's offense ran almost seamlessly against the Hawks, hitting at a .279 clip while making just nine hitting errors all match. The Golden Knights also were strong from the service line with eight aces.

New Paltz was led by Borquist against Clarkson, as Borquist had 14 kills, hit .333 and came up with eight digs. Freshman setter Maddie Zwickl doled out 24 assists, while senior libero Katy Herbst (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) totaled 10 digs. For Clarkson, junior outside hitter Victoria Kirkemo paced the attack with 11 kills, while junior setter/libero Kirstie Shurie handed out 32 assists. Freshman libero Evanne Jimenez defended a match-high 16 digs.

New Paltz 3, Simmons 0

The Hawks returned to their winning ways against Simmons, hitting .250 for the match while limiting Simmons to a .109 hitting percentage. New Paltz also posted six service aces and four total team blocks.

Borquist's 12-kill performance that accompanied a .367 hitting percentage led the Hawk attack, while Herbst keyed the back row defensively with 13 digs. Zwickl provided 30 assists, while sophomore outside hitter Chantal Ramhorst (Woodcliff Lake, N.J./Pascack Hills) collected three total blocks. Simmons' top offensive players were freshman outside hitter Sarah Woodward and freshman middle blocker Emmee Ashby, who each had eight kills, while sophomore libero Alex Itasaka finished with 12 digs. Sophomore setter Andalyn Duke posted a double-double with 23 assists and 10 digs.
