Men’s Soccer Blanks Bard, 3-0, in Midweek Match

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Two second-half goals helped lift the State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team past visiting Bard College 3-0 on Wednesday afternoon, the first game the Hawks played on Alumni Field this season.

New Paltz improves to 3-2 and travel across the Hudson River on Saturday, Sept. 20 to play Vassar College at 12 p.m. Bard falls to 3-3 as the Raptors head to Green Mountain College on Saturday at 2 p.m.

The Hawks claimed a 1-0 lead when senior midfielder Alec Johnson (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) netted his first goal of the season in the 29th minute. Johnson claimed a feed from senior back Stephen Browne (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) off a pass from the right side and rocketed a line drive into the back of the net for his seventh-career tally.

The match remained 1-0 in favor of New Paltz well into the second stanza before junior forward Jason Gonzalez (Woodside, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) scored his third of the year off a penalty kick in the 71st minute to give the Hawks a 2-0 cushion.

In the 75th minute, a Bard player was issued a red card and was forced to play a man down the rest of the way. During that stretch, sophomore forward/midfielder Sam Wasser (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills) ripped in a goal from inside the box, his second of the year, off an assist from Gonzalez in the 79th minute.

The Hawks controlled the entire match, outshooting Bard 21-5 including an 8-2 margin in shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Andres Montoya (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue) earned his second victory of the campaign, recording three saves for his fourth-career clean sheet.
