Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team fell, 1-0, in a close match with Hudson River rival Vassar College on Saturday afternoon at Gordon Field.
The Hawks drop to 3-3 and look to bounce back on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at Union (N.Y.) for a 7 p.m. match. Vassar, meanwhile, improves to 6-2-1 and plays at Kean University on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
The Brewers claimed an early lead as sophomore midfielder Noah Bloch scored his first goal of the season in only the ninth minute of play.
But the Hawks nearly knotted the game at 1-1 in the 23rd minute after Vassar's goalkeeper had an errant pass intercepted by junior forward
Jason Gonzalez (Woodside, N.Y./St. Francis Prep), but unfortunately his shot soared wide left. Gonzalez accounted for a game-high five shots during the match.
In the second half, Gonzalez had back-to-back shots in the 55
th minute, but neither could find the back of the net. Senior back
Stephen Browne (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) nearly netted the equalizer on a header off a corner by senior midfielder
Alec Johnson (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa), but the shot sailed high of the cage. Johnson registered three shots on the day.
New Paltz recorded several more shots during the remainder of the afternoon, but could not come up with the game-tying goal. The Brewers outshot the Hawks 12-10, including a 6-3 shots-on-goal edge.
Senior goalkeeper
Steven Domino (Valatie, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) suffered the loss and made two saves on the afternoon.
