Box Score NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team allowed a pair of late second half goals to SUNY Cortland and ultimately fell to the Red Dragons 2-0 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opener for both squads on Friday afternoon.
The Hawks (3-5, 0-1 SUNYAC) will look to recover tomorrow afternoon, hosting SUNY Oswego at 1 p.m. on the New Turf Field. Oswego fell to SUNY Oneonta 2-0 on Friday afternoon. Cortland improves to 6-2, 1-0 SUNYAC and plays at Oneonta tomorrow at 1 p.m.
New Paltz managed to fired off nine shots during the match, including two by junior forward
Jason Gonzalez (Woodside, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) and junior midfielder
Jake Falk (Jericho, N.Y./Jericho).
Senior goalkeeper
Steven Domino (Valatie, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) suffered the loss but recorded a season-high five saves, including a pair of diving stops in the second period.
The Hawks played an up-tempo first half and Gonzalez ripped a shot from the 18 that bounced off the post in the 31
st minute. But neither team was able to find paydirt as the game was scoreless in the opening period.
The contest remained a 0-0 deadlock until the 79
th minute when the Red Dragons scored off a set-piece pass that deflected and found the boot of Robby Reiser to give Cortland a 1-0 lead. The Red Dragons tacked on another score by Ole Daumann before the horn sounded in the 90
th minute. For Cortland, the shutout marked its sixth-consecutive clean sheet, which is a school record.
