Box Score 2 ONEONTA, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team finished the first State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Pool Play of the year unbeaten in conference matches, as the Hawks earned two wins on Saturday at SUNY Oneonta's Dewar Arena. New Paltz downed SUNY Potsdam, 3-0 (25-11, 25-16, 25-11), before topping SUNY Cortland, 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-23).
New Paltz rises to 17-3 overall and 3-0 in the SUNYAC. The Hawks have more than a week off from competition before visiting Williams College on Tuesday, Oct. 7, for a 7 p.m. match. Potsdam drops to 5-12 overall (0-3 SUNYAC) and visits Southern Vermont College on Friday, Oct. 3, at 6 p.m., while Cortland falls to 8-12 overall (2-1 SUNYAC) and visits nationally-ranked Clarkson University on Wednesday, Oct. 1, at 6 p.m.
New Paltz 3, Potsdam 0Against Potsdam, the Hawks hit .266 as a team and held the Bears to a -.077 hitting percentage. New Paltz also outblocked Potsdam, 5-0.
Junior outside hitter
Becca Borquist (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Rhinebeck) paced the Hawk attack, pounding out 14 kills and fashioning a .480 hitting percentage. Freshman setter
Maddie Zwickl (Chester, N.Y./Warwick Valley) kept the offense moving, as she doled out 34 assists. Senior libero
Katy Herbst (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) defended 18 digs, while sophomore middle hitter
Morgan Roessler (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) and Zwickl tallied two blocks apiece.
For Potsdam, graduate student outside hitter Annie Smith registered seven kills, while senior libero Gabby Arana corralled 15 digs. Freshman setter Rachel Topf handed out 11 assists.
New Paltz 3, Cortland 0In a match between two of the stronger teams in the SUNYAC the past decade, New Paltz finished with a straight-set sweep, though the final score did not fully depict the closeness of the contest. After winning the first set, 25-19, the Hawks eked out 25-23 wins in the second and third stanzas to escape with the three-set triumph.
The Hawks held a .109-to-.070 edge in hitting, while New Paltz and Cortland each finished with five service aces and six total team blocks.
Senior right side
Alex Bizub (Linden, N.J./Cranford) ignited the New Paltz offense with 11 kills and a .375 hitting percentage, while four different Hawks registered double-digit dig figures: Herbst (22), Borquist (19), sophomore outside hitter
Anna Paulik (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) (18) and sophomore libero
Rachel Pierson (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink Valley) (12). Zwickl once again drove the Hawk attack with 33 assists, while Roessler finished with four solo blocks.
For Cortland, junior middle hitter/outside hitter Sydney Hayward floored 11 terminations and hit .333, while sophomore setter Liz Roberts distributed 28 assists. Sophomore libero Melanie McGuirk shored up the back row defensively with 22 digs.
