Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team defeated Farmingdale State College, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon in its opening game at the Vassar Invitational.

The Hawks (1-1) will now play Elms College tomorrow at 12 p.m. The Rams (1-2) take on host Vassar College at 2 p.m.

Freshman forward Gino Scardino (West Hempstead, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) was the offensive star for New Paltz as he two goals on two shots off the bench. Sophomore forward/midfielder Sam Wasser (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills) also tallied a goal off the bench to pace the Hawk attack.

Senior keeper Andres Montoya (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue) earned the victory, making two saves while playing all 90 minutes.

The match was scoreless until the 18th minute when Wasser found the back of the net off an assist from senior midfielder Stephen Browne (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) to give New Paltz the early lead.

The Hawks added to their lead in the 39th minute, as Scardino tallied his first goal of the day. Freshman midfielder Danny Sloan (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) played the ball over the top, and Scardino beat the Farmingdale keeper on the left side to add to the Hawk advantage.

The contest remained 2-0 well into the second half until Scardino scored his second marker in the 66th minute, this time off a cross from senior defender Brian Spina (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central).

The Rams ruined the clean sheet by scoring only nine seconds later but the Hawks hung on for their first win of the young 2014 season.
