Box Score NEWARK, N.J. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team improved to 4-0 with Sunday's 2-1 victory over host Rutgers University-Newark in the Scarlet Raider Soccer Classic, and by virtue of going 2-0 at the event, the Hawks earned the Scarlet Raider Classic title. New Paltz downed Brooklyn College, 1-0, during its match yesterday.
Sophomore midfielder Skye Kaler (Charlton, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. This is the second time that New Paltz has captured the Scarlet Raider Soccer Classic title, as the Hawks won in 2011. Shelby Kondelka was named the MVP that year, as New Paltz defeated Widener University, 2-0, and Carthage College, 4-1.New Paltz scored late in the first half and added the second score in the second stanza. Despite a valiant comeback effort by the hosts, the Hawks held on for the victory. In the 43rd minute of action, Kaler notched her first goal of the year with a blast in the left side of the net. The match remained in favor of New Paltz, 1-0, well into the second half when sophomore forward Kaite Mulry (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) found the back of the net in the 77th minute. Mulry took a give-and-go pass from freshman forward Julia Friedman (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields) and scored on the far post to put the Hawks up comfortably, 2-0. Rutgers-Newark scored in the 82nd minute, but New Paltz was able to diffuse the rally.Kaler, senior midfielder Eleni Anselmi (Garnerville, N.Y./North Rockland) and junior forward Chelsea Weir (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) all fired off two shots apiece to lead the Hawk offense. Freshman keeper Katelyn Cordero (Airmont, N.Y./Suffern) improved to 4-0 on the year, making two saves.
In addition to Kaler, Anselmi, sophomore midfielder Hannah Moran (Albany, N.Y./Albany) and sophomore defender Sloane Lipshie (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) were named to the All-Tournament Team.The Hawks (4-0) will host Purchase College in a non-conference clash on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 4 p.m. while the Scarlet Raiders (3-1-1) host Widener on Saturday, Sept. 13, at 7:30 p.m.
