Box Score NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Junior defender
Sloane Lipshie (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) notched two second-half goals to lift the State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team, 2-1, over State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) foe SUNY Fredonia in the Hawks' season finale on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Hawks close out the 2015 season with a 3-11-3 overall record and a 2-4-3 SUNYAC record. Fredonia improves to 4-12-1, 2-6-1 SUNYAC and concludes its season against Elmira College on Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 6 p.m.
After a playing to a scoreless first half, the Hawks made their move in the 51st minute, as Lipshie sent the ball to the back of the net off of a deflected cross from senior midfielder
Chelsea Weir (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) to push New Paltz ahead, 1-0.
In the 68th minute, junior forward Alexis Moreland netted a deflected shot off of a New Paltz defender to even the score to 1-1. The Hawks bounced back, though, as Lipshie surged past the Blue Devils' defense to score in the 76th minute, clinching the final 2-1 win.
New Paltz outshot Fredonia, 24-12, and held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks. Moreland led the Fredonia offense, registering four shots with three on goal, while Audrey Yokopovich added three shots of her own.
Lipshie led the New Paltz offense with seven shots on the day. Weir and sophomore forward Gabriella Cabello (Hauppague, N.Y./Smithtown West) added to the Hawks' effort with five shots and one assist apiece.
Junior goalkeeper
Mikaela Stiklickas (Nesconset, N.Y./The Stony Brook School) took the win and posted four saves in goal for the Hawks. Her Fredonia counterpart, freshman goalkeeper Kendall Owczarzak, made 10 stops between the posts for the Blue Devils.
