Box Score 2 SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team split on the final day of the Skidmore Invitational hosted by Skidmore College on Saturday, falling, 3-2 (18-25, 17-25, 25-22, 25-19, 15-5), to Union (N.Y.) College before topping host Skidmore, 3-1 (13-25, 25-20, 25-10, 26-24).
New Paltz finishes its regular season at 21-10 overall and will now turn its attention to the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament, which runs from Friday-Sunday, Nov. 6-8, at top-seeded The College at Brockport. The Hawks, who hold the No. 2 seed, will face either third-seeded SUNY Oswego or sixth-seeded SUNY Fredonia in the semifinal round on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 3 p.m. Union rises to 27-5 with the win, while Skidmore drops to 10-23 with the loss.
Union (N.Y.) 3, New Paltz 2 While New Paltz won the first two sets by convicing margins, Union bounced back by winning the final three frames to pick up the five-set victory.
Union held a slight .126-to-.110 margin in hitting percentage and a 10-6 edge in service aces, while New Paltz finished with a 13-10 cushion in total team blocks.
Senior outside hitter
Becca Borquist (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Rhinebeck) led the Hawks with a double-double, collecting 15 kills and 12 digs. Junior defensive specialist
Anna Paulik (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) posted a double-double, too, with 10 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore setter
Maddie Zwickl (Chester, N.Y./Warwick Valley) dished out 36 assists, while junior outside hitter
Katy Braddon (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) landed four aces. Defensively, junior liberos
Meg Kinee (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) and
Rachel Pierson (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink Valley) defended 15 and 14 digs, respectively, while junior middle hitter
Brittany Tyack (Commack, N.Y./Commack) and junior middle hitter
Morgan Roessler (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) tallied seven and six blocks, respectively.
For Union, junior outside hitter/defensive specialist Ally VanDoren and senior outside hitter Kelley White picked up 16 and 11 kills, respectively, while junior setter Amanda Price doled out 43 assists. VanDoren and Price each finished with double-doubles, adding 16 and 12 digs, respectively. Defensively, junior libero Katherine Moeller registered a match-high 25 digs.
New Paltz 3, Skidmore 1 New Paltz enjoyed a reversal of fortunes in its final match of the day, overcoming a 25-13 setback in the first set by winning the next three.
The Hawks recorded a .150 hitting percentage for the match while holding the Thoroughbreds to a .041 clip. While New Paltz finished with a 10-4 margin in blocks, Skidmore floored 12 service aces to the Hawks' five.
Borquist and Roessler keyed the Hawk attack with 14 and 11 kills, respectively, while Zwickl issued 39 assists. Defensively, sophomore outside hitter
Veronica Matedero (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) tallied 15 digs, while Tyack totaled six blocks.
For Skidmore, freshman outside hitter Caite Canfield landed 15 kills and added 11 digs to complete the double-double. Freshman setter/right side Bailey Hutchins handed out 26 assists, while sophomore hitter Clara Jones floored five aces. Sophomore defensive specialist/setter Kalle Fox paced the back row defensively with 16 digs.
