Box Score NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (25-10, 25-22, 25-9) loss at the hands of non-conference Williams College on Tuesday evening at the Hawk Center.
Williams, which made the national quarterfinals at the NCAA Division III Tournament last year, had an impressive offensive showing, hitting .452 (49-7-93) for the match. The Ephs also finished with the upper hand in service aces (5-3), blocks (4-3) and digs (50-30).
New Paltz drops to 11-7 overall with the loss and next competes at the second State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Pool Play of the season from Friday-Saturday, Oct. 9-10, at SUNY Plattsburgh. Williams rises to 11-5 overall with the win and next visits Hamilton College in a conference match on Friday, Oct. 9, at 8 p.m.
New Paltz played Williams close in the early goings of the first set, but the Ephs went on a 7-0 run to stake themselves to a 13-3 advantage. The visitors scored points in bunches the rest of the way and prevailed, 25-10, in the first.
The Hawks started out hot in the second stanza, building an 11-4 lead after a service ace by junior libero
Rachel Pierson (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink Valley). After New Paltz claimed an 18-12 edge, Williams scored six of the next seven points to draw within one. The two teams traded points until the Ephs rode a diversified attack to construct a 23-21 advantage. Following a kill by senior outside hitter
Becca Borquist (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Rhinebeck), the Ephs scored two unanswered points to seal a 25-22 victory in the second.
Williams never trailed in the third set, scoring six straight points on two separate occasions to take the match with a 25-9 win in the stanza.
Borquist led the Hawks with 11 kills and nine digs, while sophomore setter
Maddie Zwickl (Chester, N.Y./Warwick Valley) doled out 23 assists. Junior middle hitter
Brittany Tyack (Commack, N.Y./Commack) reinforced the front row defensively with three block assists.
For Williams, junior outside hitter Tori Jasuta, freshman defensive specialist Ally Ostrow and senior middle hitter Katherine Lane floored 14, 11 and 10 kills, respectively, while senior setter Ryan Farley handed out 39 assists. Ostrow and Jasuta each registered double-doubles with 12 digs apiece.
