NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – In his first appearance in an NCAA Division III men's soccer game, junior forward Tyler Lundgren (Wallkill, N.Y./Wallkill) scored the game-winning goal for the State University of New York at New Paltz, lifting the Hawks to a 1-0 double-overtime win over Mount Saint Mary College in the season opener for both teams Tuesday at Alumni Field.

The match remained scoreless until the 105th minute, when Lundgren found the ball from senior forward Jason Gonzalez (Woodside, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) to end the game in the second of two golden-goal overtime sessions.
 

New Paltz rises to 1-0 overall and will go head-to-head against Lehman College on Saturday, Sept. 5. Mount Saint Mary drops to 0-1 overall and moves on to compete in the Union Soccer Classic from Friday-Saturday, Sept. 4-5 against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Sept. 4 at 4:30 p.m.) and Union (N.Y.) College (Sept. 5 at 7 p.m.).

New Paltz outshot the Knights, 25-8, on the afternoon and held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks. Lundgren led the Hawks with nine shots, while junior forward Charlie Versen (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./The Masters School) notched six of his own. Sophomore goalkeeper John Guzzo (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) earned the start in goal and played the entire 104:14, collecting one save in the shutout victory.
