Men’s Soccer Overcomes Wet Conditions to Defeat Old Westbury, 4-1

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Despite the heavy afternoon rain, the State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team defeated The College at Old Westbury in a 4-1 decision at Alumni Field.

The Hawks extend their winning streak to 4-0 and look for their fifth win of the season when they host Vassar College on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 1 p.m. Old Westbury drops to 0-4 and eyes its first win of the season against Brooklyn College on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 4 p.m.

New Paltz put on the pressure in the early goings of the game, as the Hawks continuously fired off shots against the Panthers' defense but were unable to find their target. Old Westbury managed to grab the lead in the 26th minute when a shot from outside the 18 found the back of the net.

The Hawks responded quickly, as junior midfielder Tucker Stern (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz) notched the equalizer on a breakaway cross from sophomore forward Aleco Podias (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun).

New Paltz pushed ahead with a 2-1 lead, as senior forward Jason Gonzalez (Woodside, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) scored off a one-touch pass from junior forward Tyler Lundgren (Wallkill, N.Y./Wallkill).

Lundgren went on to score the Hawks' third goal of the match in the 68th minute before junior midfielder Sam Wasser (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) sealed the 4-1 victory for New Paltz in the 81st minute.

The Hawks outshot the Panthers, 23-9, and had a 12-0 advantage in corner kicks. Junior midfielder Charlie Versen (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./The Masters School) led the Hawks' offense with four shots, while Lundgren and Gonzalez notched three shots and one assist each.
