Box Score ALBANY, N.Y. – A penalty kick in the second half made all the difference for the State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team as they dropped a 1-0 decision to The Sage Colleges Sunday afternoon.
The Hawks drop to 1-4 and return home on Wednesday, Sept. 16, to face Union (N.Y.) College at 4 p.m. Sage rise to 4-2 and next compete against Southern Vermont College on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 4 p.m.
Senior midfielder
Kristina Gandolfo (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) attacked the ball early in game play in an attempt to land the Hawks on the scoreboard but shot the ball wide.
Freshman defender
Raven Blake (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) broke through the Gators' defense twice to try and score for New Paltz but was unable to find the back of the net. Before the end of the first half, senior midfielder
Chelsea Weir (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) attempted one more shot for New Paltz but couldn't put the ball past the Sage goalkeeper.
In the second half, both teams were fighting to score the first point of the game before a penalty kick in the 88
th minute gave Sage a 1-0 lead. Sophomore midfielder
Danielle Grossi (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) tried to tie up the score in the 90
th minute to take the game into overtime but was thwarted by the Sage goalkeeper and the Gators sealed their victory.
Sage outshot the Hawks 10-9 but both teams had one corner kick each. Gandolfo led the offense with three shots and one shot on goal while Blake tallied two shots and one shot on goal for the day.
Freshman goalkeeper
Mary Flanagan (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) played the full 90 minutes and made five saves between the posts.
