Box Score NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team fell, 2-0, to Union (N.Y.) College in a non-conference contest held at Alumni Field on Wednesday.
The Dutchwomen scored once in each period, with both goals coming from senior midfielder/forward Breana Derella. Union finished with a 20-11 edge in shots and a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
New Paltz drops to 1-5-0 overall with the loss and next hosts the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 10 a.m. Union rises to 1-1-3 with the win and entertains Hartwick College next on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Union got on the board in the ninth minute when Derella took advantage of an empty net after beating the goalkeeper at the top of the 18-yard box. The Dutchwomen controlled the momentum for most of the first half of play, but the Hawks made a late push, with senior midfielder
Kristina Gandolfo (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) and sophomore defender
Alexa Appel (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) each putting shots on goal in the final five minutes before half.
The Dutchwomen added to their lead in the 60th minute when Derella headed a ball in the goal that came off the foot of her teammate, senior defender Jessica Farland. While the Hawks had a few chances to cut into the deficit, Union ultimately preserved the clean sheet.
Offensively for New Paltz, junior midfielder
Kaite Mulry (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) unleashed three shots, while Gandolfo and Appel took two shots each.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Katelyn Cordero (Airmont, N.Y./Suffern) and freshman goalkeeper
Mary Flanagan (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) combined to make five saves in the loss for New Paltz, while freshman goalkeeper Erica Matteo made five stops for Union in the win.
