Box Score 2 MAHWAH, N.J. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team finished up Ramapo College's Roadrunner Invitational with a pair of wins on Saturday at the Bradley Center, topping the University of Scranton, 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-23), before downing St. Joseph's (LI) College, 3-0 (25-5, 26-24, 25-23).
New Paltz rises to 8-6 overall with the victories and opens up State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Pool Play action from Friday-Saturday, Sept. 25-26, at Buffalo State. The Hawks' first match of the conference schedule against SUNY Fredonia on Friday at 5 p.m. is a rematch of last year's conference championship match.
New Paltz 3, Scranton 0 The Hawk attack continued to click against the Royals, as New Paltz hit .358 (44-10-95) on the match. Both teams finished with six service aces apiece, while New Paltz held a 6-2 edge in total team blocks.
Senior outside hitter
Becca Borquist (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Rhinebeck) led the Hawks with a match-high 18 kills off a .385 (18-3-39) hitting percentage, and she added 10 digs to complete the double-double. Sophomore setter
Maddie Zwickl (Chester, N.Y./Warwick Valley) dished out 32 assists, while junior defensive specialist
Rachel Pierson (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink Valley) defended 12 digs. Junior middle hitter
Morgan Roessler (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) was involved with all six New Paltz blocks, posting one solo block and five block assists.
For Scranton, freshman middle hitter Kristin Kirwan led the offense with 13 kills and a .360 (13-4-25) hitting percentage, while junior setter Brittany Cafiero handed out 28 assists. Junior libero Danielle Cafiero defended 11 digs, while sophomore right side Morgan Rentzheimer landed four service aces.
New Paltz 3, St. Joseph's (LI) 0 New Paltz made quick work of St. Joseph's in the first set, but despite a challenge from the Eagles in the second and third stanzas, the Hawks pulled off a straight-set sweep.
The Hawks hit .368 (46-11-95) for the match, and they outgained the Eagles, 7-0, in service aces. St. Joseph's finished with a 3-0 cushion in total team blocks.
Borquist hit a sizzling .563 (10-1-16) on the match, while junior right side
Katy Braddon (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) joined her in double figures with 10 kills as well. Sophomore setter
Melannie Aquino (Billerica, Mass./Burlington) and Zwickl dished out 21 and 14 assists, respectively, while Pierson tallied 17 digs and three service aces.
For St. Joseph's, senior middle hitter Heather Ferchland floored 10 kills, while junior setter Courtney Wickline distributed 24 assists. Freshman outside hitter/defensive specialist Jenna Beekman defended 15 digs.
