Men’s Soccer Edges Cortland, 2-1, in SUNYAC Opener

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team opened its State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play with a 2-1 win over SUNY Cortland on Friday afternoon.
 
The victory marks New Paltz's first win over Cortland since 2009. The Hawks rise to 6-1, 1-0 and will play SUNY Oswego tomorrow at 12 p.m. Cortland falls to 5-2-1, 0-1 and will host SUNY Oneonta tomorrow at 1 p.m.
 
In the 35th minute, senior forward Jason Gonzalez (Woodside, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) rebounded a save by Cortland's goalkeeper to give New Paltz a 1-0 advantage over the Red Dragons.
 
Cortland responded with the equalizer in the second half as Nick Tata knocked in a shot from 30 yards. The score remained locked until Gonzalez was awarded a penalty kick in the 85th minute that found the back of the net for the 2-1 lead. The Red Dragons attempted to tie up the score but were unable to do so as the buzzer signaled the end of the game.
 
Despite the win, Cortland outshot the Hawks, 19-13, and held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. Gonzalez led the offense with three shots and two goals while junior Tyler Lundgren (Wallkill, N.Y./Wallkill) recorded three shots and one assist. 
 
Sophomore goalkeeper John Guzzo (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) earned the win in goal and made five stops for the Hawks.
