Women's Volleyball Falls Twice on Day 1 at Haverford/Swarthmore Tournament

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team opened up play at the Haverford/Swarthmore Tournament with a pair of losses on Saturday at Haverford College's Calvin Gooding '84 Arena, falling, 3-0 (25-12, 25-21, 25-22), to Carnegie Mellon University before dropping a 3-2 (25-16, 25-22, 20-25, 17-25, 16-18) heartbreaker to Cabrini College in the nightcap.
 
New Paltz drops to 0-3 overall with the losses and looks to reach the win column tomorrow with matches against The City College of New York (12 p.m.) and Swarthmore College (4 p.m.) at Swarthmore's Tarble Pavilion.
 
Carnegie Mellon 3, New Paltz 0
 
Carnegie Mellon displayed its strength as a University Athletic Association (UAA) program on the rise, hitting .274 (37-14-84) for the match while flooring five service aces in a straight-set sweep. The Hawks did, however, post 10 total blocks to the Terriers' seven.
 
Junior middle hitter Morgan Roessler (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) contributed both offensively and defensively with 11 kills and three total blocks, while sophomore setter Maddie Zwickl (Chester, N.Y./Warwick Valley) dished out 26 assists. Junior libero Rachel Pierson's (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink Valley) seven digs served as New Paltz's top defensive total from the back row.
 
For Carnegie Mellon, freshman outside hitter/defensive specialist Lauren Mueller led the way with 13 kills, while junior setter Emily Newton provided 22 assists and two service aces.  Defensively, junior libero Ivana Vlahovic finished with nine digs, while freshman outside hitter Sydney Bauer had three blocks.
 
Cabrini 3, New Paltz 2
 
New Paltz came up just short of salvaging a split on the day, winning the first two sets before nearly capturing the fifth. In a match that featured strong back-row play, Cabrini bested New Paltz, .217-to-.194 in hitting percentage.
 
Roessler floored a career-high 21 kills and hit .429 (21-3-42) in the process, and she also finished with five solo blocks. Zwickl dished out 46 assists, while junior libero Meg Kinee (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) and junior outside hitter Anna Paulik (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) defended 31 and 27 digs, respectively.
 
For Cabrini, junior middle hitter Christin Ingargiola and senior opposite Jen Grenauer landed 12 and 11 kills, respectively, while senior setter Cassidy Koenig handed out 47 assists. Junior outside hitter/defensive specialist Kelly Guarino paced the back row with 30 digs.
