Meet ResultsNEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's swimming team combined for three Elting Pool records in a 140-81 dual-meet win over Mount Saint Mary College on Saturday afternoon.
The 200 medley relay team of sophomores
Caleb Treadwell (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) and
Colin Duell (Glens Falls, N.Y./Glens Falls) and seniors
Ethan Cooke (Middletown, Conn./Middletown) and
Will Koenig (Highland, Calif./Redlands East Valley) started the meet off with a pool record in the first event, charting a time of 1:36.51. That shattered the former standard of 1:37.69 set by SUNY Cortland in 2015.
The Hawks bookended the meet with a pool record in the 200 freestyle relay, as the foursome of Koenig, Treadwell, Cooke and junior
Austin Kowalsky (Bellmore, N.Y./W.C. Mepham) clocked a time of 1:26.04. That bettered the former record of 1:26.76 set by SUNY Geneseo in 2012. To boot, Koenig led off the relay with a pool record in the 50 freestyle; his time of 21.54 edged the former facility standard of 21.69 set by Frank Schiappa of Geneseo in 2012.
New Paltz rises to 3-2 overall with the win and next visits Catskill Cup rival SUNY Oneonta on Saturday, Jan. 23, at 1 p.m. Mount Saint Mary drops to 3-7 with the loss and next visits Lehman College on Friday, Jan. 22, at 6 p.m.
All told, the Hawks won 13 of the 14 events contested and had 10 different individuals place first, including two wins from Kowalsky.
Sophomore
Barrett Celecki (Barneveld, N.Y./Holland Patent) started off the individual events with a win in the 1,000 freestyle (10:31.63), while junior
Rob Cahn (Bellmore, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) followed that up with a victory in the 200 freestyle (1:53.34). Duell won the 50 breaststroke (28.62) before Kowalsky and senior
Tom Anderson (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) captured the 100 butterfly (56.10) and the 50 freestyle (23.35), respectively, heading into the first break.
Sophomore
Matthew Kessler (Highland Mills, N.Y./Cornwall Central) paced the field in the 100 freestyle (52.42), while Treadwell took the 100 backstroke (57.88). After senior
Ryan Lindgren (Hurley, N.Y./Kingston) touched first in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.66), New Paltz entered its events as exhibition the rest of the meet. Freshman
Joe Galante (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) notched an exhibition win in the 500 freestyle (5:14.31), Kowalsky registered an exhibition triumph in the 50 butterfly (23.96) and sophomore
Marc Piliero (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) notched an exhibition victory in the 100 individual medley (57.47).
Second-place finishes came from junior
Thomas Whittico (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) in the 50 backstroke (29.12) and the 500 freestyle (5:14.88, exhibition), Lindgren in the 50 breaststroke (28.69) and the 100 individual medley (59.25, exhibition), Koenig in the 100 butterfly (56.13), Anderson in the 100 freestyle (52.75), sophomore
Tyler Newman (New Hartford, Conn./New Hartford) in the 100 backstroke (1:00.82), junior
Vitaut Gurskiy (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.60) and Cooke in the 50 butterfly (24.11, exhibition).
