Women’s Basketball Tops Oswego, 64-48

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's basketball team pulled out a 64-48 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win over host SUNY Oswego Friday evening.

The Hawks rise to 11-5, 6-3 SUNYAC and next play at SUNY Cortland tomorrow at 2 p.m. Oswego drops to 3-13, 1-8 and will host SUNY Oneonta tomorrow at 2 p.m.

The teams kept the score close in the first quarter until the Hawks went off on a 15-3 spurt that was capped off with a successful free-throw by sophomore guard Sydney Pinn (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) for a commanding 24-14 advantage.

Although the Hawks maintained their lead in the second period, New Paltz's hot streak started to fizzle as the Lakers were quick to erase a 12-point deficit, bringing the score within two. As the clock ticked down, sophomore forward Stephanie Volpe (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) drained a last minute layup to push the Hawks lead to 35-31 at intermission.

New Paltz picked up the tempo throughout the third session, leading by a 49-41 margin into the final period. The Lakers would grab seven more points before being held scorless in the last four minutes as the Hawks clinched the victory.

New Paltz held a 53-36 edge in rebounds while scoring 21 points off turnovers and collecting 26 points off the bench. Oswego squeaked past the Hawks' 31.0 shooting percentage (22-of-71) as the Lakers shot 32.0 percent (16-of-50) while making 6-of-14 (42.9 percent) from beyond the arc and 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from the line.

Junior forward Courtney Irby (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) paced the team with 11 points and nine boards, converting 4-of-8 from the field and 2-of-2 from the line. Junior guard/forward Kit Small (Slingerlands, N.Y./Acadmey of the Holy Names), sophomore guard/forward Laura Stuart (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue), and freshman guard Lindsay Bettke (Pelham, N.Y./The Ursuline School) notched nine points apiece for the win.

For Oswego, junior guard Mary Mazella led with 16 points while senior guard Taylor Sorell chipped in 13 points. Sophomore forward Zana Dillard collected a team-high eight boards for the loss.
