UTICA, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz picked up a pair of non-conference victories on Saturday afternoon in the SUNY Polytechnic Tri-Match, defeating Nazareth College 3-0 before knocking off the host Wildcats 3-0 at the Wildcat Field House.
The Hawks (14-9 overall) will now prepare for the final SUNYAC Pool Play next weekend, Oct. 21-22, held at SUNY Cortland. New Paltz is scheduled to take on Buffalo State, SUNY
Oneonta and Cortland.
New Paltz 3, SUNY Poly (25-17, 25-18, 25-16)
Against the host Wildcats (14-9 overall), senior outside hitter
Anna Paulik (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) led the team with nine kills while chipping in seven digs and three block assists. Junior setter
Maddie Zwickl (Chester, NY/Warwick Valley) dished out 28 assists with four digs while junior libero
Veronica Matedero (Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) contributed 12 digs.
Senior middle hitter
Brittany Tyack (Commack, NY/Commack) hit .333 with seven kills and four block assists while senior middle hitter
Chantal Ramhorst (Woodcliff Lake, NJ/Pascack Hills) provided six kills (.300) and a team-high three aces. Freshman middle hitter
Kerri Neville (Commack, NY/Commack) and freshman right side
Meghan Keyes (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) both enjoyed five kills apiece.
The Hawks limited the Wildcats to a .031 hitting percentage in the first set and a -.094 mark in the third set, while hitting .333 in the second stanza.
Tied at 10-10 in the first set, the Hawks went on a 10-1 run to claim a commanding 20-11 lead, thanks in part to kills from Paulik and Tyack. Ramhorst, Keyes and Neville all enjoyed kills to close out the first set.
Knotted at 11-11 in set number two, New Paltz capitalized on an 8-3 run to claim a 19-14 lead, thanks to kills from Paulik, Ramhorst and Keyes. The Hawks ended the second stanza with kills from Neville, Paulik and Tyack while Matedero contributed an ace.
In the third and final set of the afternoon, New Paltz jumped out to a strong start,leading 19-7, scoring the majority of the points on serves by Matedero, Keyes and freshman outside hitter
Maddie Van Pelt (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central). The Hawks took advantage of several Wildcat errors down the stretch to wrap up the match.
New Paltz 3, Nazareth 0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-23)
Paulik tallied a team-high 12 kills to go along with two blocks against the Golden Flyers. Ramhorst and Tyack each added seven kills apiece to lead the Hawks offense while Zwickl distributed 35 assists and notched 15 digs for the double-double.
Matedero contributed nine digs and two assists while freshman Nicole Fellone (Centereach, NY/Centereach) tallied six digs defensively.
