NEW PALTZ, NY – Playing the sixth-ranked team in the New York Region on Wednesday night, the women's volleyball team at the State University of New York at New Paltz fell to visiting Vassar 3-0 (20-25, 28-30, 23-25) on Senior Night at the Hawk Center.
The Hawks (16-11), the 10
th-ranked team in the New York Region, will now prepare for the Skidmore Invitational this weekend, playing Ithaca (No. 2 New York), Union (No. 5 New York) and the host Thoroughbreds from Oct. 28-29.
Prior to the match, the team honored its five senior members:
Chantal Ramhorst (Woodcliff Lake, NJ/Pascack Hills),
Meg Kinee (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown),
Anna Paulik (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh),
Morgan Roessler (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) and
Brittany Tyack (Commack, NY/Commack).
Overall, Roessler (.333) and Paulik (.233) led the attack with 12 and 11 kills, respectively while freshman
Maddie Van Pelt (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central) chipped in eight kills of her own.
Junior
Maddie Zwickl (Chester, NY/Warwick Valley) orchestrated the offense with 38 assists while junior
Veronica Matedero (Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) tallied 15 digs. Freshman
Nicole Fellone (Centereach, NY/Centereach) chipped in seven digs off the bench while Roessler, Tyack and Zwickl combined for 16 total blocks.
In the first set, the Hawks found themselves trailing the Brewers (19-9) 8-1 before chipping away at the deficit and getting to within four (14-10), paced by several Van Pelt kills. After an
Emily Visintini (Brooklyn, NY/Fort Hamilton) ace handed New Paltz just a two-point hole, trailing 16-14, Vassar would go on to claim a 21-17 lead and would go on to close out the opening period, 25-20.
Set number two was a battle but the home team struggled in the early going, trailing 7-3 out of the gates. The Hawks bounced back and knotted the set up at 10-10 thanks to kills by Paulik, Van Pelt and freshman
Meghan Keyes (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake). Neither team enjoyed more than a three-point lead as the contest head past the 25-point threshold. The contest remained back-and-forth and tied at 28-28, the Brewers capitalized on consecutive attacking errors by the Hawks to hand New Paltz a 2-0 deficit.
New Paltz enjoyed an early 5-1 lead in set number three, forcing the Brewers to call timeout. Out of the break, the Hawks increased their lead to 10-6 thanks to a
Kerri Neville (Commack, NY/Commack) kill. Vassar, however, battled back to tie the game at 10-10 and went on an 8-4 spurt to take an 18-14 lead. Despite climbing to within one (23-24) after kills by Van Pelt and Roessler, a serving error handed the match over to Vassar.
