SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on the final day of the Skidmore Invitational, falling to Union 3-2 (28-30, 25-23, 25-17, 26-28, 10-15) before losing to the host Thoroughbreds 3-0 (19-25, 21-25, 17-25) on Saturday.
The Hawks (17-13, 7-2 SUNYAC) earned the No. 3 seed in the upcoming postseason and will next host the quarterfinal round of the SUNYAC Tournament against No. 6 seed SUNY Oswego on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 6 p.m. in the Hawk Center.
Following her performance this weekend, senior outside hitter
Morgan Roessler (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) was named to the All-Tournament Team as she averaged 14.67 kills per set during the three matches.
Union 3, New Paltz 2
Roessler floored a career-high 22 kills and added six blocks to go along with four service aces and three digs against the Dutchwomen (24-10), the No. 5 ranked team in the New York Region. Fourth-year middle hitter
Brittany Tyack (Commack, NY/Commack) registered a career-high 13 kills with five blocks.
Junior setter
Maddie Zwickl (Chester, NY/Warwick Valley) dished out 47 assists and defended 12 digs. Three other Hawks recorded double-digit digs, as junior libero Veronia Matedero (Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) registered a team-high 29, senior outside hitter
Anna Paulik (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) recorded 22 and freshman libero
Nicole Fellone (Centereach, NY/Centereach) defended 16. Paulik also added seven kills and four blocks to her stat sheet.
New Paltz jumped out to a quick start in the first set as the team led 16-9. An 11-4 run by Union tied the set at 20-all, with the two teams eventually being evened up at 23-all. The Hawks had their opportunities to win the set as they led 25-24 and 26-25, but the Dutchwomen would go on to capture the set.
The two teams traded scores throughout the second set, as the score stood at 20-all. But New Paltz finished on a 5-3 run to take the second set and even up the match at 1-1.
The Hawks came out firing on all cylinders in the third set as they led 18-6. Union would make it a much closer battle at 23-17, but New Paltz won the set and took a 2-1 lead in the match.
New Paltz looked poised to win the match, as the team led 16-9 in the fourth set. Similar to the first set, an 11-4 run by the Dutchwomen evened the set at 20-all. The Hawks had their chances to capture the match in four sets, as the team held 23-21, 24-22 and 26-25 advantages. But Union finished on a 3-0 run to send the match to a deciding fifth set.
The two teams were neck-in-neck throughout the final set as Union held a slight 9-8 advantage. But the Dutchwomen completed the match on a 6-2 run to take home the victory.
Skidmore 3, New Paltz 0
Tyack led the offense with 11 kills (.500) versus the Thoroughbreds (16-16) while Roessler chipped in 10 and freshman
Maddie Van Pelt (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central) provided eight kills. Zwickl dished out 32 assists with Matedero providing the defense with 10 digs. Zwickl and Van Pelt contributed eight and five digs, respectively.
The Hawks trailed 4-0 in set number one but battled back to within 8-6. Skidmore went on several spurts and claimed a commanding 17-10 lead before New Paltz pulled within four, 18-14. However, the Thoroughbreds proved to be too strong and closed out the opening period.
New Paltz enjoyed an 11-7 lead into the second set and were leading 17-11 before Skidmore rallied and knotted the set up at 20-20. With the contest tied at 21-21, the Thoroughbreds used a 4-0 run to take the second stanza.
In the third and final set of the afternoon, Skidmore jumped ahead 7-2 which forced New Paltz to call a timeout. Following the talk, the Hawks rattled off a 7-0 run to take a 10-8 lead. But this was short lived as Skidmore answered with a 6-3 spurt to regain the lead 14-13. Unfortunately, New Paltz never led again as Skidmore outscored the Hawks 11-4 for the duration to end the match.
