WILLIAMSTOWN, MASS. – Junior setter
Maddie Zwickl (Chester, NY/Warwick Valley) became the fifth player in program history to amass the 3,000 assist plateau, however, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team fell at host Williams 3-1 (24-26, 13-25, 25-18, 18-25) on Tuesday evening.
Needing just 15 assists to reach 3,000 career entering the match, Zwickl ended the evening with 31 assists to go along with 14 digs for the Hawks (10-8). She now stands alone at fourth all-time with 3,016, passing Gisselle Medina (3,000; 1997-99, 2001).
Senior
Anna Paulik (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) posted a double-double with 12 kills and 17 digs while senior
Morgan Roessler (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) tallied 11 kills, seven blocks and two aces. Classmate
Chantal Ramhorst (Woodcliff Lake, NJ/Pascack Hills) contributed six kills, five aces and three blocks.
Junior libero
Veronica Matedero (Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) paced the defense with 20 digs. New Paltz struggled offensively against the Ephs (8-7), hitting .096 on the night.
After dropping the first two sets, the Hawks bounced back to take the third set despite falling behind early 4-0. New Paltz went on a 7-0 run and followed that with a 6-1 spurt to claim a 15-10 lead.
The Ephs battled back and scored four straight points to get within one (15-14) but another 5-0 run by New Paltz quickly erased the threat. With the score 20-17, the Hawks enjoyed a 5-1 rally to take the third set win. However, Williams would go on to win the fourth set 25-18 to close out the match.
The Hawks will now prepare to host SUNYAC Pool Play this weekend, Oct. 7-8, hosting SUNY Geneseo, Brockport and SUNY Plattsburgh. New Paltz plays Geneseo on Friday at 5 p.m., Brockport on Saturday at 10 a.m. and Plattsburgh on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
