NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Despite grabbing a 2-1 lead in the second half, the women's soccer team at the State University of New York at New Paltz could not hold on and fell to visiting SUNY Potsdam 3-2 in SUNYAC action on Friday afternoon at South Turf Field.
After the Hawks (1-11-2, 0-5-0 SUNYAC) surrendered a goal to the Bears (8-3-1, 1-2-1 SUNYAC) in the sixth minute off a ripped shot from 30 yards out, junior forward
Gabriela Cabello (Hauppauge, NY/Smithtown West) curled an impressive shot from outside the 18-yard line into the upper 90 for the equalizer in the 24
th minute.
Both teams headed into halftime knotted at 1-1 before junior back
Monica Rouse (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) headed home a corner kick from freshman midfielder
Jessica Fox (New Hyde Park, NY/New Hyde Park Memorial) to give New Paltz a 2-1 edge in the 53
rd minute.
However, this lead was short lived as the Bears countered with the equalizer in the 60
th minute and then jumped ahead 3-2 in the 78
th minute.
New Paltz looked to tie the game late as junior forward
Danielle Grossi (Sayville, NY/Sayville), freshman forward
Danielle Michelini (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) and junior back
Julia Friedman (Centerport, NY/Harborfields) all fired shots in the closing minutes but could not find the back of the net.
Overall, the Bears outshot the Hawks 17-11 (7-6 shots on goal). Grossi led the New Paltz attack with three shots (all on goal) off the bench while Cabello tallied two shots.

Katelyn Cordero (Airmont, NY/Suffern) made four saves in the loss.
The Hawks return to action tomorrow, hosting SUNY Plattsburgh at 1 p.m. for Senior Day. The Cardinals fell at SUNY Oneonta 1-0 on Friday.
