NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team remains undefeated in conference play as the Hawks downed State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) foe SUNY Geneseo, 3-1 (25-22, 25-20, 25-27, 25-17), in the first day of this weekend's SUNYAC Pool Play.
The Hawks surged to lead with four unanswered points in the first set but the Knights would put up a strong fight, bringing the score within one (8-7) before notching two points to take their first lead of the match. Several Geneseo attack errors gave the advantage back to New Paltz, which would not relinquish control as the Hawks earned the victory on a set-winning kill by senior outside hitter

In the second set, the Knights jumped ahead with a 4-2 run before the Hawks dished out seven unanswered points for an 8-4 lead, sending Geneseo into a timeout. Coming out of the break New Paltz continued its heavy offensive attack, extending their advantage to 15-6 to force another Geneseo timeout. The Knights managed to cut the deficit to 24-20 but a service error would hand the Hawks the second set win.
Both teams battled hard in the third frame but the Knights would seize the advantage on a 4-0 run, forcing the Hawks to take a timeout. New Paltz managed to rope the score to 19-18 on a Geneseo attack error before dishing out three unanswered points to grab a 21-19 lead. The Hawks were able to maintain their advantage all the way to match point but the Knights pushed a 6-1 run to earn their first win of the afternoon.
The Hawks came out swinging in the final set, pushing a 7-1 run for an early lead. The Knights were able to cut the score to 19-16 but would only be able to score one more point before the Hawks sealed the match victory four unanswered points later.
The Hawks (11-8, 4-0 SUNYAC) concluded the match with a 6-4 advantage in blocks and held Geneseo (8-9, 2-2 SUNYAC) to a .089 (42-28-157) clip while hitting .186 (57-27-156) for the match.
Roessler hit .483 for the day off of 16 kills, two errors and 29 attempts. Senior outside hitter
Anna Paulik (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) also recorded 16 kills while senior middle hitter
Chantal Ramhorst (Woodcliff Lake, N.J./Pascack Hills) added 10 kills and two service aces. Junior setter
Maddie Zwickl (Chester, N.Y./Warwick Valley) notched a double-double 46 assists and 21 digs for the Hawks.
Freshman outside hitter Grace Cergol led the Geneseo offense with 16 kills. Freshman defensive specialist/libero Sam Mendelsohn defended 21 digs while sophomore setter Emily Ast dished out 34 assists.
The Hawks are back tomorrow when they take on The College at Brockport at 10 a.m., followed by a 12:30 p.m. match up with SUNY Plattsburgh in the Hawk Center.
