NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team split a pair of conference matches on Saturday afternoon during the final day of SUNYAC Pool Play at the Hawk Center.
The Hawks (12-9, 5-1 SUNYAC) will next compete in the SUNY Polytechnic Tri-Match on Saturday, Oct. 15 when they take on Nazareth College and host SUNY Polytechnic Institute.
Brockport 3, New Paltz 0 (25-27, 21-25, 18-25)
Senior outside hitter
Morgan Roessler (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) notched a match-high 16 kills and added four blocks while hitting .414 (16-4-29). Senior outside hitter
Anna Paulik (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) and senior middle hitter
Chantal Ramhorst (Woodcliff Lake, NJ/Pascack Hills) registered eight kills each, with Paulik also contributing nine digs.
Junior setter
Maddie Zwickl (Chester, NY/Warwick Valley) dished out a team-high 30 assists to go with nine digs, while junior libero
Veronica Matedero (Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) led the Hawks with 11 digs.
The first set remained close throughout, as the two teams were tied at 24-all. A kill by Paulik brought the set to match point as New Paltz looked poised to take a 1-0 match lead, but the Golden Eagles went on a 3-0 run to close it out and take the first set.
Brockport jumped out to a quick 4-0 start in the second set, but New Paltz was able to fight back and take a 9-7 lead. The Golden Eagles eventually tied the set at 11-all, and from there a 7-4 run gave Brockport an 18-15 lead. The Hawks fought to keep the set close at 22-21 in favor of Brockport, but the Golden Eagles again finished on a 3-0 run to capture the second set.
The third set saw the two teams exchange points early on as the set stood at 11-all. But from there Brockport went on a 14-7 run to finish off the match and the sweep of the Hawks.
New Paltz 3, Plattsburgh 1 (27-29, 25-21, 25-22, 25-18)
Roessler tied her career-high with 21 kills and set a season-high with eight blocks (two solo, six assists), while Paulik notched 14 kills and defended a season-high 26 digs. Senior middle hitter
Brittany Tyack (Commack, NY/Commack) and Ramhorst set new career-highs with 10 kills each, with Tyack hitting .444 (10-2-18) in the match.
Zwickl recorded 51 assists and 11 digs, while Matedero and senior libero
Meg Kinee (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) recorded 22 and 13 digs, respectively.
New Paltz led early in the first set at 10-4 before Plattsburgh fought back to make it a 13-12 set in favor of the Hawks. New Paltz would eventually go up 18-13 and looked poised to take the set as the score stood at 24-18. But a 6-0 run by the Cardinals tied it at 24-all. A kill by Ramhorst made it 25-24 in favor of New Paltz, but Plattsburgh went on a 5-2 run from there to take the first set.
The Hawks dominated early on in the second set, as they led 11-3. The Cardinals made it a closer set at 16-11 in favor of the Hawks, but New Paltz pushed ahead to make it 24-18. Plattsburgh won the next three serves, but unlike the first set the Hawks did not blow a 24-18 lead as a kill by Tyack evened the match at 1-1.
New Paltz again dominated early on in the third set as they led 10-3 and later on 20-8. The Cardinals would then go on an impressive 14-4 run to make it a tight 24-22 set. But the Hawks held on for the win as Paulik clinched the set with a kill.
Plattsburgh started the fourth set with a 4-1 run, but New Paltz won the next five serves to capture a 6-4 lead that they would not surrender. Although the Cardinals would keep the match close at 16-13 in favor of New Paltz, the Hawks finished the set on a 9-5 run to earn the match victory in four sets.
