POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer squad remained undefeated on Sunday, ending in a 1-1 double overtime draw with William Paterson in the final day of the Vassar Tournament.
The Hawks now stand at 3-0-2 and will travel back to Vassar on Wednesday, Sept. 14 to take on the Brewers at 4 p.m. in a non-league match.
Junior midfielder
Ben Zilka (Levittown, NY/General Douglas MacArthur) notched his first goal of the season in the 27
th minute, tipping in a cross from junior midfielder
Aleco Podias (Merrick, NY/Sanford H. Calhoun), to give New Paltz a 1-0 lead. Zilka led all players with four shots on the day.
The Pioneers (3-2-1) would score the equalizer during the 66
th minute. In overtime, New Paltz fired off two shots but could not find the back of the net.
Junior netminder
John Guzzo (Carle Place, NY/Carle Place) played the entirety of the game, tallying four saves including a penalty kick stop in the 50
th to retain the lead for New Paltz.
Sophomore midfielder
Manny Flory (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) and senior midfielder
Charlie Versen (Dobbs Ferry, NY/The Masters School) both registered two shots apiece for the Hawk attack.
William Paterson had a slight edge in shots (12-10) and led in corners 5-1. In a chippy contest, 26 fouls were called and four yellow cards were issued.
