OSWEGO, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team gave head coach
Kyle Clancy a victory in his debut on Friday, as the Hawks knocked off Norwich 1-0 in the squad's season-opening match in the SUNY Oswego Tournament.
New Paltz moves to 1-0 on the young season and play SUNY Polytechnic tomorrow at 1 p.m. while Norwich falls to 0-1 and plays the host Lakers.
Senior
Arthur Angst (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore) provided the offense for the Hawks, driving home a header in the 21st minute thanks to a feed from senior midfielder
Charlie Versen (Dobbs Ferry, NY/The Master School) off a corner kick play.
Junior
Gino Scardino (West Hempstead, NY/H. Frank Carey) led the attack with three shots, two on target. Junior
Ben Zilka (Levittown, NY/General Douglas MacArthur) chipped in two shots as well.
Senior goalkeeper
Mark Nowak (Newburgh, NY/Marlboro Central) made four saves for the Hawks.
For the match, New Paltz held the edge on shots, 9-8, with six on goal. The Hawks also attempted nine corners to the Cadets' two.
