Men’s Soccer Draws 1-1 Tie with Old Westbury

Box Score

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team drew a 1-1 tie with The College at Old Westbury after two regulation halves and two overtime periods in a non-conference tilt on Wednesday afternoon.

Neither team managed to break open the scoring in the first half of play but the Panthers found their stride in the 75th  minute as junior forward Dominick Guidice launched the ball past senior goalkeeper Mark Nowak (Newburgh, N.Y./Marlboro Central) off a feed from senior forward/midfielder Adan Velasquez to place Old Westbury ahead, 1-0.

The Hawks responded in the 76th minute as sophomore defender Sebastian Gordon-Somers-Archer (Forest Hills, N.Y./The Kew-Forest School) found senior midfielder Sam Spring (Long Island City, N.Y./NYC Lab Schools for Collaborative Studies) in the box for a tap-in goal to even the score, 1-1, and send the game into overtime.

Despite hard fought efforts on both sides, neither team was able to break the tie in the two overtime periods, therefore sealing the draw.

New Paltz outshot Old Westbury, 19-11, and held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Offensively, Spring recorded six shots for the Hawks with three on goal while senior forward Tucker Stern (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz) tallied four shots with three on goal. Junior midfielder/forward Gino Scardino (West Hempstead, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) and sophomore midfielder Manny Flory (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) recorded two shots apiece.

For Old Westbury, Velasquez tallied three shots with one on goal while sophomore midfielder/defender James Marchena had two shots.

Nowak made four stops in goal for the Hawks while his Old Westbury counterpart, sophomore goalkeeper Mike Warren, recorded 10 saves.

The Hawks (2-0-1) next compete in the Vassar Tournament from Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 10-11. New Paltz will face Elms College on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 4 p.m., followed by Williams Paterson College on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 12 p.m.
