NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Freshman Cooper Knapp (Glens Falls, N.Y./Glens Falls) set an Elting Pool and school record in the 100 backstroke on Friday evening as the State University of New York at New Paltz men's swimming team defeated visiting SUNY Cortland 138-116 in the first dual meet of the season for the program.
Knapp clocked a time of 51.12 in the 100 back, breaking the previous school record held by Jesse Sweeney '12 (51.65) in 2012 and the pool record set by Greg Charriez of Stevens (53.30), also in 2012. Knapp also took home first place in the 200 back with a reading of 2:01.10.
The Hawks claimed first place in the 200 medley relay with a reading of 1:39.54 behind the quartet of junior co-captain Caleb Treadwell (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland), junior Collin Duell (Glens Falls, N.Y./Glens Falls), junior Kevin Sales (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) and senior Jeff Pietkiewicz (Fremont, Calif./Irvington).
Senior Rob Cahn (Bellmore, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) enjoyed a winning mark of 10:36.20 in the 1,000 free while junior Barret Celecki (Barneveld, N.Y./Holland Patent) brought home first in both the 200 free (1:50.86) and 500 free (5:04.74).
Meanwhile in the 200 butterfly, freshman Konstantin Lomeyko (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) earned the top spot with a mark of 2:04.92 and Pietkiewicz touched the wall first in the 100 free in 48.20.
Treadwell enjoyed a win in the 100 fly (54.80, exhibition) and the team closed out the evening's events with a 1:30.25 (exhibition) victory in the 200 freestyle relay thanks to the performance of Pietkiewicz, junior Marc Piliero (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill), Sales and junior Matthew Kessler (Highland Mills, N.Y./Cornwall Central).
This marked the team's first action since Oct. 22 when New Paltz competed in the Union Relays.
The Hawks (1-0) will host Catskill Cup rival SUNY Oneonta on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 1 p.m.
