NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – For the second-straight meet, freshman Cooper Knapp (Glens Falls, N.Y./Glens Falls) set an Elting Pool and program record while the 400 freestyle relay also broke a pool record as the State University of New York at New Paltz men's swimming team defeated SUNY Oneonta 138-116 on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Hawks improve to 2-0 in dual meets this season and New Paltz now holds a slim 16-15 lead in the Catskill Cup rivalry standings. The Hawks will now prepare for the SUNY Geneseo Invite on Saturday, Jan. 28. Oneonta falls to 2-3.
Knapp placed first in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:55.56, his first-ever participation in the event (high school or college). His pool and program record time eclipsed Ethan Cooke's '16 program record of 1:56.67 and Eric Culver's pool record mark of 1:56.77, set in 2009 for New Paltz High School.
This is the second-straight meet the Knapp has set a program record, as he shattered the 100 back mark on Jan. 14 against Cortland with a reading of 51.12. Knapp also won the 100 fly (exhibition) with a time of 51.84.
Saturday marked Senior Day for the New Paltz swimming program as the team honored its 10 members of the class of 2017.
Also breaking an Elting Pool record was the 400 freestyle relay squad which turned in a time of 3:10.60 thanks to the performances by senior Jeff Pietkiewicz (Fremont, Calif./Irvington), junior Barrett Celecki (Barneveld, N.Y./Holland Patent), Knapp and junior Caleb Treadwell (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland). The quartet broke the previous record of 3:14.20, set by SUNY Geneseo in 2012.
To start the day off, the 400 medley relay team took first with a time of 3:38.09 behind the swimming of Knapp, senior Vitaut Gurskiy (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst), Treadwell and Pietkiewicz.
In the 1650 free, Celecki enjoyed a first-place reading of 17:42.00 while Pietkiewicz placed first in the 200 free, touching the wall in 1:47.67. Pietkiewicz also won the 100 free, with a mark of 47.42.
Junior Marc Piliero (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) brought home first in the 100 back (56.90) and 200 back (2:05.52) and Treadwell turned in a first-place time of 22.52 in the 50 free. Senior Rob Cahn (Bellmore, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) enjoyed a winning time of 5:07.99 in the 500 free.
Saturday also marked the program's Senior Day as head coach Tom Eickelberg honored the team's six seniors in a pre-meet ceremony: Pietkiewicz, Gurskiy, Cahn, Thomas Whittico (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme), Matt Alfultis (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) and Nolan Graziano (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Rhinebeck).
