Tucker Stern (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz) of the State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team has been selected to play for the Maccabi USA Futsal team which will compete in the 20
th Maccabiah Games held in Israel.
The Maccabiah is the world's largest Jewish athletic competition in the tradition and values of Maccabi, emphasizing the centrality of the State of Israel in the life of the Jewish people. The Maccabiah takes place every four years in Israel - "the Jewish Olympics" as they are often called, are Maccabi World Union's largest and most famous enterprise.
The Maccabiah games is the third-largest sporting event in the world (after the Pan-American games and the Olympics), with around 10,000 athletes competing from 80 different countries.
Stern will enjoy a four-week trip starting on June 15
th. The first 10 days is traveling the country with other U.S. athletes and learning more about the region and culture. The following week is training camp with organized events where athletes of all countries participate. The last two weeks are the Maccabiah Games. Opening ceremony begins on July 6th and the competitions run until July 17th.
The 20th Maccabiah / Maccabiah 2017 is going to be the biggest, and probably the most successful of all Maccabiot - a saga that started in 1932. During July 4-18 2017, the largest international Jewish-Zionist event will host about 10,000 athletes and 22,000 additional fans from more than 80 countries in a festival of Sports, Jewish continuity and connection to the Center of the Jewish People, the State of Israel.
All Jewish Communities are engaged in this extraordinary goal, under the general organization of Maccabi World Union - supported by the State of Israel and all Israel National Institutions.
Besides meeting each other in competitive matches in the most qualified stadiums, Israelis and Jews from every corner of the world will join in countless programs designed to build strong relationships and significant shared experiences. Maccabiah 2017 will celebrate the 50 years of Jerusalem since its reunification, in its Opening Ceremony at Jerusalem Teddy Stadium and many other events.
