SUNY New Paltz Field Hockey GAME PREVIEW: No. 16 University of Rochester

The State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team will travel to No. 16 University of Rochester for a non conference match on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 4 p.m. The Hawks enter the game with a record of 2-3, while the Yellow Jackets are currently 4-1.

Last season SUNY New Paltz hosted Rochester and lost, 2-1. The Hawks have never defeated the Yellow Jackets, but have only lost by one goal in three of their four match ups.
 
SUNY New Paltz:
Junior Serena Capsello leads the team and is tied for first in the conference with four goals. Senior Justine O'Reilly is tied for first in the SUNYAC in assists with four, and she has also scored three goals. O'Reilly is also first in the conference with 10 points while Capsello is second with nine. Junior Samantha Ackerman and freshman Carly Croteau each have two goals, while senior Hayley Kim and sophomore Kaitlyn Gunter have one. Senior Megan Gangewere is second in the SUNYAC with 47 saves.

In their last game on Wednesday, Sept. 13 the Hawks snapped a three-game losing streak with a 5-0 win over conference foe Morrisville State College. O'Reilly recorded two goals on the day, while Ackerman, Capsello and Kim each scored one goal. Gangewere made four saves in the cage to preserve the shut out.

"Wednesday gave us a boost of confidence and we are taking the necessary steps to improve as a whole," head coach Shanna Szablinski said. "I am very much looking forward to our game against a talented team like Rochester."

University of Rochester:
Senior Claire Dickerson is ranked second in the Liberty League with seven goals, while senior Olivia Denny is second on the Yellow Jackets with three goals. Junior Nancy Bansbach is ranked first on the team with three assists. Senior Kiran Sundaram has given up just one goal this season and has posted two shut outs.

The Yellow Jackets won their last game against The College at Brockport by a score of 6-0 on Wednesday, Sept. 13. They out-shot the Golden Eagles 28-1 and held a 15-1 advantage in penalty corners.

"Rochester is one of the toughest opponents on our schedule," Szablinski said. "They are well coached and very disciplined defensively. We need to be relentless in the circle and control their speed to take away high percentage scoring chances."
