SUNY New Paltz Finishes Second in Final Commissioner’s Cup Standings

Hawks close out their run in the SUNYAC with second-straight second place finish in Commissioner’s Cup standings

Syracuse, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz finished second overall in the final SUNYAC Commissioner's Cup Standings for the second straight year in the University's final stint in the State University Athletic Conference.

The second-place standing is the highest ever for the Hawks who boasted two conference titles during the 2025-26 academic year in women's tennis and women's basketball, while all but one program making postseason contention with seven teams making their way to at least the semifinal round.

Women's Tennis collected its 11th overall SUNYAC Championship this past fall and became the second team sport ever for SUNY New Paltz to claim four-straight SUNYAC titles, joining field hockey's run from 2012 to 2015.

Women's Basketball also took home its second SUNYAC title in three years, fifth in seven years and seventh overall. The team had one of its most dominant seasons to-date, winning 26 games and finishing with an overall record of 26-3 and SUNYAC record of 17-1 to secure the No. 1 seed in the postseason tournament where they'd go on to defeat SUNY Cortland to notch their eighth trip to the NCAA Tournament.

The Patrick R. Damore Commissioner's Cup is determined by the 22 different conference sports in the fall, winter and spring. A 10-point system is used in each sport with the first-place team getting 10 points, second earning nine points and so on. A team's regular season finish is added to their postseason finish and divided by two for their final total for that sport. The total number of points that a school accumulates is then divided by the number of conference sports they have.

Cortland placed first with 9.47 points, followed by the Hawks with 7.02. Oneonta finished third (6.96), followed by Oswego (6.09), Plattsburgh (5.78), Buffalo State (5.47), Fredonia (5.32), Canton (3.02), Morrisville (2.84) and Potsdam (2.14).
