Box Score New Paltz, NY – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball continued their winning ways as they toppled Western Connecticut State University 25-15, 25-23, 25-19.
It was a team effort from the Hawks as all 16 players stepped on the court at some point during the match. "It was nice that everybody contributed and all 16 got out there at different points," said head coach
Matt Giufre. "We had been working on some things offensively in practice that we tried to do tonight in the game and although we had some mistakes we also had some good moments too."
Part of the Hawks resurging offense comes from the new addition of
Julie Greenspan to the starting rotation. Greenspan led SUNY New Paltz offensively with eight kills and two errors on 18 attempts for a .333 hitting percentage. "I think our offense was amazing," said Greenspan. "Everyone was going for the ball, everyone was fighting and we just didn't give up."
Kerri Neville also added 8 kills offensively while
Taylor Cimillo and
Maddie Van Pelt weren't far behind with 7 and 6, respectively. The well-balanced offense was yet again run through the hands of senior setter
Maddie Zwickl who chipped in 28 assists for the match.
The defense, which has been a staple of Hawk volleyball this year, played consistent and strong against the Colonials totaling 43 digs.
Nicole Fellone led the way with 12 digs while senior libero
Veronica Matedero added nine.
The first set was all Hawks as they never trailed in the set. A monster right side kill by
Julie Greenspan sealed the set for SUNY New Paltz. The second set was a different story as the Colonials weren't going to back down.

The Hawks jumped out to a 17-9 lead in set two, but that's when Western Connecticut began their comeback. After a few offensive errors from SUNY New Paltz the Colonials took advantage with a couple kills by Alyssa Dam and they cut the lead to 23-22. The Hawks were able to walk away with the second set though following an attacking error from Kamari King.
The third set began back and forth, but a flurry of
Kerri Neville kills at 12-11 gave the Hawks a 16-12 advantage. Neville backed up her offense at the serving line as she stepped up and served two consecutive aces at 19-13 to make it 21-13 for SUNY New Paltz.
A late push from the Colonials brought the score to 24-19, but an incredible team effort on match point from the Hawks sealed the deal. Following a tough dig defensively freshmen setter
Haley Timarky ran full speed towards the net and swung one arm out at the ball in a last ditch effort to make the save. Her save ended up as a perfect set on the pin for Cimillo who jumped up and cranked a match-winning kill.
"I thought it was a really nice win for us," said Giufre. "It was complete with the serving and the passing it was just a really complete game."
The Hawks look to continue their win streak next week on Tuesday, October 3 as they host Williams College at 7:30 p.m.
