SUNY New Paltz Men's Basketball Can't Get Over Slow First-Half Start On The Road Against Oneonta

SUNY New Paltz vs. SUNY Oneonta Men's Basketball
Box Score Oneonta, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz men's basketball team fought back from a 19-point deficit early in the second half to get within five of hosting SUNY Oneonta Saturday, but the Hawks couldn't complete the comeback and ultimately took their second-consecutive loss, 82-72.

"Our effort and energy was too low in the first half," SUNY New Paltz coach Keith Kenney said. "You do that on the road and you will struggle to win."

The Red Dragons (8-5 overall, 4-3 SUNYAC) held the Hawks (4-10, 1-6) to just 27 first-half points and took their largest lead of the day, 54-35, with about 12 minutes remaining in the game. SUNY New Paltz slowly chipped away at the deficit, riding on the hot-hand of senior Brandon Guest. Guest scored 12 of his game-high 20 points in the second half, and started an 11-2 run in the following three minutes or so, which was highlighted by Paddy Parr's seven points in the stretch.

Once SUNY New Paltz cut the score down to 10, SUNY Oneonta matched the Hawks basket for basket to keep its cushion until a 9-1 run by the Hawks, which was capped off with a Nick Paquette 3, diminished its lead to just five with 1:27 remaining.

A pair of free throws brought the Red Dragons' lead back to seven and after Paquette knocked down another shot, SUNY Oneonta went back to the free throw line and hit two more to bring its cushion back to nine with 44 seconds and iced the win.

Along with leading his team offensively, Guest also added four rebounds, two assists, three blocks and a steal in 32 minutes of action. Paquette followed with 13 points, six boards and a block, while Parr added 13 points off the bench to go along with two rebounds, two assists and a steal. Cory Garcia was also in double-figures for SUNY New Paltz, finishing with 10 points, two rebounds, three assists and two steals.

The Hawks are back on the road Tuesday to take on Oswego State for a 7:30 p.m. match up. Be sure to follow @nphawks on Twitter and @newpaltzhawks on Instagram and Facebook for live updates, highlights, game recaps and more!
