SUNY New Paltz Men's Soccer Falls 2-1 in Overtime Against SUNY Geneseo

| By:
Box Score Geneseo, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team lost in overtime Saturday, 2-1, to host SUNY Geneseo.

The loss was the Hawks' first since Sept. 22. They had played a double overtime game against first-place The College at Brockport a day earlier and earned a point in the, 1-1 tie. But, could not manage the same result against the Knights.

"Tough one today," said SUNY New Paltz coach Kyle Clancy. "We have a lot we can improve on this week to be ready for the next weekend."

The Hawks created more chances on offense than SUNY Geneseo throughout the 90-plus minute match. In the second half alone, they out-shot the Knights, 11-1.

SUNY Geneseo took advantage of one of their four scoring chances in the first half to grab the early lead. Bryan Wager got behind the SUNY New Paltz defense to get a shot on target, which deflected off Hawks goalkeeper Marc DePasquale and another defender before heading into the net.

James Maltes, for the second straight game, was the catalyst offensively for SUNY New Paltz, scoring his second collegiate goal. Luke Dole played a ball in from the left side, which was flicked on by Kevin Doorley back post to Maltes who knocked in the game-tying score to force overtime.

There was only six minutes of extra time played before the Knights earned a corner, which resulted in the game-winner. Wagner headed in the golden goal off a ball played in by Marco LaRocca.

"Both goals came from long balls in behind that we just didn't defend properly," Clancy said. "We need to just be a little sharper in the back and do better winning in the box. That's the area we need to improve on the most. Besides that, we created some good chances and got around them a lot, just didn't connect on the final ball."

SUNY New Paltz held the advantage on total shots (21-7) and corners (7-1) in the game.

The Hawks are back on the road next weekend, taking on SUNY Potsdam and Plattsburgh State. To stay up to date with everything #NPHawks be sure to follow on Twitter at @nphawks, Instagram and Facebook at @newpaltzhawks, and subscribe to our Youtube channel,New Paltz Hawks.
